Top Reviews from Experts The Mazda MX-5 Convertible has become the blueprint for the small, affordable roadster, and it delivers so much more than the sum of its parts.

All versions are great fun, thanks to light-footed, assured handling. There's decent space in the cabin and comfortable seats, even if the boot is rather small.

We reckon the 1.8 gives you all the power you need, although it's easy to see the appeal of the 2.0's extra grunt. The entry-level engine also keeps the cost down and is great value for money. The 2.0-litre doesn’t look like such great value because it’s only available in pricey Sport Tech trim, and the firmer suspension makes the ride a little firm. However, neither version is especially cheap to run compared with rivals like the Mini Roadster.

If you plan to buy an MX-5, keep an eye on Mazda’s website – the firm is always offering high-value special editions.
