 The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a departure for BMW. It is designed to be a larger, more practical version of the 1 Series hatchback, and rivals five-seat MPVs such as the Citroen C4 Picasso and Volkswagen Golf SV. The big news, though, is that it is front-wheel drive, whereas most BMWs are rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel-drive models are also available, if you regularly drive on slippery surfaces.
Our favourite engine is the 2.0-litre diesel in the 218d. It’s economical, more refined than the four-cylinder diesels in many other BMWs, and decently powerful.
We'd go for entry-level SE trim. It is generously equipped, coming with dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and automatic lights and wipers.
Sport models add sports seats and larger wheels, while Luxury trim features leather upholstery. Range-topping M Sport versions get 18-inch wheels, stiffer suspension and even more figure-hugging sports seats – if such things really matter on an MPV.
